The Journey

Type

2D Animation Masters Project

DESCRIPTION

This animation represents my Master's Project. We had to create a maximum of 2:30-minute animation with the theme of our choosing. I chose to challenge myself into creating a horror-themed short cinematic animation that would serve as the starting cinematic for a concept game.

YEAR

2021

GENRE

Horror, Tense, Adventure, Sadness

SOFTWARE

CONCEPT DESIGN

In the first version of the storyboard Lila, the older sister was already trapped in the Underworld so her designs consisted in having a combiation of the Earth school uniform with bandages and knives to show how she has been living on survival mode.

Long hair was another element I thought work but since there were no "before" scenes it would have been harder to tell.

Despite my project being just a cinematic I added as many elements in Lila's design that would hint she is not from Earth, like skin and eye color.

Final turnaround sheet and some dynamic pose studies.

The younger sister took shape during the later version of the storyboard, her design being simplistic.

She is a stay at home, matured at a young age character so her design had to show just that by balancing childish-looking clothing with a mature face.

Final turnaround sheet for Oliva

The last element that links the two sisters is a stuffed toy that would guide Lila to find her young sister.

This toy in particular would also link Lila to the Underworld.

For the backgrounds, I had to design 3 locations: The room of the sisters, the cult cave, and the panned-out shot of the Underworld seen from the outside of the cave.

The craft room is a modest and rather empty since only the 2 girls lived there. The mood here is still homey and calming.

In comparison, he cave is extremely dark and gives a tense mood in any corner you look. One form of an eye would be seen in any background to give the sense of always being watched.

Storyboard

This is the final storyboard of the animation with all the information needed to go into production.
